I am beyond excited to announce that book 7 in the I am beyond excited to announce that book 7 in the multi-author series A Classic Retold is now out in the wild! The remarkable @hkayewrites has been bringing joy and healing into my life with her books before I ever had the privilege to call her friend. To say that it was a delight and an honor to be collaborating with her on A Classic Retold is an understatement. Chase the Legend is a truly special book, and I cannot wait for the world to finally read it.
.
.
BLURB:
.
The End of the Map lies far behind you now. Here there be dragons.
The nation of Outer Melvia runs on the power of dragon oil, but only the Hunters of Map’s End are fearless–or foolish–enough to pursue the great beasts of the deep.
.
In the wake of a broken engagement, Ilsa Starling boards the Hunting vessel Relentless in search of the solace the sea promises her.
.
But dragons are not the only threats that lurk in these uncharted waters. As first mate aboard Relentless, Ilsa becomes a key player in the impossible quest determined by her captain, Adam Chase. Once Map’s End’s rising star, Chase lost everything to an ill-fated encounter with a legendary white dragon that haunts the seas at the very edge of the world. Now the captain swears to avenge himself on the beast and restore all that was stolen from him, no matter what–or who–he may lose along the way.
.
In this gaslamp fantasy reimagining of Moby Dick, Hannah Kaye spins a tale of hurt and healing, breathing hope into Herman Melville’s timeless tragedy.
Happy release day to my amazing sister @tspecficti Happy release day to my amazing sister @tspecfictionToday is the day.The book that inspired the entire Classic Retold series has now been published. This book, written by my darling sister, moved me so deeply, uplifted me so much, that I decided to put together a multi-author series about classic literature (an intense, two-year project) just to see this amazing read get published. This is an incredibly special story - a story so inspiring it propelled me through two of the toughest years of my writing career. But that's what Tor does for me every single day. She inspires me as a writer, a woman, and a Christian. She's not just my sister, but a soul-mate and best friend. She's one of the most special people I've ever know: and her courage, faith, and imagination infuse SUMMON THE LIGHT.I hope you love it as much as I do.

HAPPY RELEASE DAY TO BOOK 5 IN THE MULTI-AUTHOR SE HAPPY RELEASE DAY TO BOOK 5 IN THE MULTI-AUTHOR SERIES, A CLASSIC RETOLD!For years, @ninaclarebooks was one of those amazing authors that I gazed upon with awe. Looking up from my small stature in the publishing world, I was rather shy at first in interacting with this veteran of writing. But after A Villains Ever After, I decided to reach out to Nina personally to tell her how much I enjoyed her work. Nina responded with typical graciousness and, before I knew it, we were exchanging testimonies. I knew I wanted this lovely writer by my side in this grand adventure called A CLASSIC RETOLD and I am honored to be publishing alongside her once again!MINI REVIEW OF RAISE THE DEADRaise The Dead is the perfect spooky read for October. This gothic and mystical fantasy that very much reminded me of George Macdonald’s Phantastes, but with a female narrator who is refreshingly gentle in her strength. One of the things I always notice about Nina Clare is her ability to NAIL the premise of whatever multi-author series she is in: with a Villain’s Ever After, Nina truly honed in on the villain’s aspect of her main character, with A Classic Retold, Nina truly encapsulates the CLASSIC aspect. With her impeccable writing style: Nina’s story truly FEELS like a book of yesteryear, with an “old-fashioned” POV that feels both riveting and genteel. If you are looking for a moody retelling where Jane Eyre collides with the symbolic and the supernatural, where the bleakness of the English winter and Hell itself is overcome by the power of light, this book is for you!

Saying goodbye. Perhaps one of the most difficult Saying goodbye. Perhaps one of the most difficult things a human being ever has to do. It is the great pain that connects us all. There are many things we find ourselves saying goodbye to: our childhood, our health, a place, a beloved, a job, a season, a dream, perhaps even our freedom. It’s a lot—and sometimes the easiest way to process things is through fiction. Hence, a collection of some stories that have helped me get a better perspective on goodbyes.Mary Poppins Returns features a plethora of goodbyes: saying goodbye to a wife, a mother, even a home. But this movie shows the magic of joy is not limited to one season.Space Boy begins with the heroine saying goodbye to her friend and the only world she’s ever known as she is put into stasis and sent on a twenty-year journey to Earth. But Amy is a resilient heroine, and a healing one. Amy shows us that it's okay to feel lose deeply, but how vital it is to keep living, even when things are ending.Sweep is about saying goodbye to ourselves when we give our hearts to someone else and the pain of embracing the fragility and temporariness of love.Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium is about saying goodbye to a beloved friend, the image of what you thought life would be, and having the grace to believe that something good can come after that.Kiki’s Delivery Service is about saying goodbye to childhood, but also saying goodbye to those invisible perimeters that keep us in our comfort zone. Kiki teaches us that maturing is hard, and we can never go back to the carefree certainty of childhood, but also shows there is purpose and wonder to be found in the unknown territory of adulthood. When Marnie Was There is about abandonment, and the release and relief of rejecting bitterness and forgiving those that leave us behind. The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic is about saying goodbye to safety, and the marvelous freedom that comes from acknowledging that life is an ever-changing mess, as well as a miracle. All of these stories helped me process so much and helped lead me back into the serenity of letting go.(Space Boy comes with one major caveat. See my pinned comment).
Happy release day to book 4 in #AClassicRetold! 🐙From the moment I first discovered @authoralissajzavalianos’s bookstagram, I knew I had come across a rare soul. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this was a woman I wanted to work alongside. Alissa has brought *so* much to the Classic Retold collaboration: I can’t imagine embarking on this adventure without her pure spirit, dependable expertise, and her gentle commitment to clean fiction. I am so thankful for everything she has brought to this project, both as an author and as an individual, and I couldn’t be more excited for her lovely new release UNEARTH THE TIDES.MINI REVIEW:Underwater adventures were never so cozy, nor was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea so unique! The perfect for adult fans of Studio Ghibli and Disney, or anyone who has an old soul and a childlike heart. This unique retelling of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is full of high stakes, but the low stakes vibe lends a consistently cozy atmosphere throughout. Adventure, political intrigue, and a touch of sweet romance abound in this seafaring fantasy about the power and beauty of embracing mercy
Bring Forth The Heroes.I miss the days when fict Bring Forth The Heroes.I miss the days when fiction had heroes. Shining, unabashed, noble heroes that filled us with a sense of awe and humility. “I’m not as good or as brave as Beowulf,” I might think, “But God, help me to be!”I miss the days when we wanted to do better, when we had our eyes fixed upon fictional things that were loftier than us. I miss the days when we allowed ourselves to be inspired.I am weary of the abominable deconstructionism that has invaded every area of our world—including fiction. Goodness is viewed as insincerity. Holiness is seen as pompousness. Noble deeds are held suspiciously up to the mirror—there must be a dirty secret behind *that!*There is a concentrated attack on role models, hidden under the deceptive guise of “relatability”—in which anything and everything better or higher than us must be brought down to our level. Or, better yet, beneath our level. Wouldn’t want readers to feel inadequate reading about King Arthur, now would we?Inspirational heroes are persona non grata these days because this modern age refuses to let us be inspired by anything but our own reflection. To be inspired by someone or something else is to recognize that we fall short of such inspirational status. To be inspired is to also be convicted to strain towards self-improvement so that we can become more like something that is UNLIKE ourselves.Hersey! cries the world.Acknowledging our own failings and being convicted to do better is forbidden. And so heroism is dashed from the pages of fiction.Unless we bring it back . . .Break the Beast is a salute to the archetypal heroes that used to inhabit our shelves: the resolute, unshakable, examples that fill our hearts with awe and who live in our minds to rise up--like good ghosts--when times are hard to remind us: "Be brave, as I was!"It takes courage and humility to admit that we need role models, that there are people--in fiction and in reality--who are greater than us. We need this courage and humility. Let us seize it with both hands, and cling to the unabashedly inspirational roles that have fueled generations.Bring forth the heroes . . . on the page, and in real life.
Happy release day, @jenellelschmidtThere are no Happy release day, @jenellelschmidtThere are no words to describe how incredibly privileged I was to be able to publish alongside Jenelle Schmidt in A Classic Retold. Jenelle’s wit, wisdom, and all around talent make her an ideal fellow warrior for any adventure. I learned SO MUCH from this lady and shared many a laugh in between my furious note taking. I am so thankful for everything she has brought to this collaboration, both as an author and as an individual, and I couldn’t be more proud and excited for her lovely new release, Steal the Morrow.A MINI REVIEW:I’ve always loved the concept of Oliver Twist, but found the original work too depressing—and most retellings lacking. How fortunate I am then to have finally found a version that honors the original work while simultaneously infusing this story with one of the most original takes on the tale I’ve ever seen. Mythical beasts, elevated trains, and Neverland and Robin Hood vibes are merely some of the things you can find in this fantasy retelling of Oliver Twist without the sadness. A truly satisfying story that reminds you of the goodness of ordinary people that left me glowing and smiling as I turned the final page.
QOTD: What’s a fictional death you’ll never ge QOTD: What’s a fictional death you’ll never get over? The first time I ever REALLY mourned over the death of a fictional character was when Martin the Warrior’s girlfriend Rose was killed in the Redwall series. It was the first time I ever truly grasped the idea of tragic storytelling: both its beautiful and awful qualities. In that case, I think it was appropriate for the story, because it affected so much of Martin’s arc. But there are many other character deaths I can think of that are simply gratuitous and stupid and should have never seen the light of day. The first one that popped into my head for this category was Archie Kennedy for Horatio Hornblower: I will never, EVER, get over how unnecessary, stupid, and heinous that was.SPOILER ALERT: I hate to tell you this, but characters do die in, Break the Beast. However, I am a major champion of the idea that character deaths should be few and far between and that they should ALWAYS be meaningful and should ALWAYS be purposeful: propelling either the theme, characters, or plot forward.I think it is the shabbiest and laziest thing in the world for a writer to use death in their books for nothing but shock value. My goal with each death in Break the Beast was that I never, ever, want my readers to feel cheated, used, or hopeless. Death in Break the Beast is deliberately infused with purpose, thematic resonance and, ultimately, hope.Because that’s what A Classic Retold is all about: hope even in the midst of what feels like the ultimate end. A Classic Retold is a series that focuses on purpose amidst the pain. A Classic Retold focuses on the undeniable truth: that for the faithful, pain, lose, and death are only the beginning, not the end.
QOTD: What's a story that fills you with hope?H QOTD: What's a story that fills you with hope?HAPPY HOBBIT DAY!What’s this? Two posts in one day? Allison never does that. But I’ve been wanting to post something on Hobbit Day, so here we are!Being a slightly counter-cultural being, I of course am talking today about HARFOOTS: those protoype hobbits featured in the controversial show The Rings of Power. I personally adored the Harfoots, far more than I did the Hobbits, and I’ve had this blog post brewing in my head for a whole year.Yes, I finally wrote a new blog post! “How The Hobbits Restored My Hope” is now up on my author website.https://allisonteboauthor.com/2023/09/22/how-the-harfoots-restored-my-hope/
Happy release day, @worldofvindor!If you had tol Happy release day, @worldofvindor!If you had told me a few years ago that I would one day be publishing alongside Emily Golus: I probably would have laughed. Back then, I was just a wide-eyed fan of this remarkable author. So how incredibly amazed I am today to now count this author as a friend and fellow conspirator in A Classic Retold. I am so grateful for everything she brings to this collaboration and so excited and proud of her latest brilliant contribution to the literary world!A MINI REVIEWReworking Les Miserables into a short retelling is a boggling feat for any author, but it is one Emily Golus handles not only with aplomb, but with an originality that defies conventional fantasy. This take on the classic tale is told from a truly unique narrator: a female goblin. I cannot even begin to tell you how refreshing it was to read a fantasy that wasn’t narrated by the typical “hot and youthful” female. Valshara was one of the most original and lovable main characters I have read about in a long, long time! This unique narrator (coupled with the refreshing lack of romance), were merely two small factors that make this book wonderful. Emily Golus is a master at world-building, and Crack the Stone is no exception! The meticulous attention to detail and culture makes a novel by Golus a rich reading experience. In addition, her themes never fail to move me to tears: Valshara’s arc is guaranteed to make you cry. This poignant story of sacrifice and maternal love will linger in your heart and mind long after you reach the final page. Once again, Golus knocks it out of the ballpark!
“𝑱𝒐𝒚 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕 “𝑱𝒐𝒚 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔, 𝑰 𝒂𝒎 𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆, 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒎𝒚 𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉-𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒔.” – 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝑩𝒆𝒐𝒘𝒖𝒍𝒇Almost one week, come and gone, since publishing my latest novel. It’s still sinking in that Break the Beast is FINALLY out in the wild. I was burdened with this story for so long, I’m still trying to come to grips that I’m finally free of it.In many ways, writing Break the Beast wounded me: there was a toll on my mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Beyond my normal chronic conditions, there really were times when I was drafting Break the Beast where I felt ill.It was like a two-year fever. I was burning up with the relentless compulsion of the Holy Spirit to finish it and get it “out there,” while at the same time fighting a wrestling match with the demonic resistance that came against me and this novel.Break the Beast was hard. I had to dive into places I didn’t want to be, draw on years of pain that I honestly wish I hadn’t experienced, and camp for twenty-three months amongst a story that was the antithesis of my usual writing.I have to admit I didn’t enjoy a particle of this experience. But I was obedient, and that was singular victory I could wearily cling to when I couldn’t dredge up much excitement on release day.But I have now been surprised by joy. My DM’s have been filled with readers reaching out to me about how Break the Beast is speaking to them, shaking them, carving away the layers to shed light into dark places. I’ve been humbled, amazed, and surprised by a dawning gladness. There was a cost to Break the Beast—but there was also a prize. At long last, the words the Holy Spirit wished to say, through my novel, are touching hearts. A worthy prize indeed. All Glory and all praise to the Almighty: for He was the creator of the inexplicable power that forms gems in the darkness and blades in the fire.At long last . . . joy, over all of this, I am able to have, despite my wounds.

I think about the characters from the Chronicles of Narnia all the time. I’ve been thinking about Nikabrik lately and have a blog post or caption rumbling around in my head for him and what his arc is REALLY about. Stay tuned . . . 👀🍁 a recent quote that stood out to me:
I was reading a book called Defiant Joy by Stasi Eldredge and she talked about how Jesus interferes in our lives. I thought that was the most interesting choice of words and I’ve been meditating on it. It summons up quite a different picture from the more commonly used word “intervenes.” “Interferes” is often used in a negative light: that person who just won’t leave well enough alone, always ramming their oar in, discussing you with others, making plans for how to run your life . . . “Intervenes” summons up images of being saved when we really want to be: “interferes” implies being saved when we DON’T want to be. But Jesus has the RIGHT to interfere, and we ought to thank Him forever that He does seize us and mold us and worry over us and discuss us and waylay us. Humanity doesn’t just need intervention; it needs interference. We need a divine and holy “meddler” to interfere in our stubbornness and blindness. And Thank God that He sent His Son to do just that.🍁 books I want a tv show/film adaption of:
