How The Harfoots Restored My Hope

Rings of Power.

A touchy subject for many, but not really for me.

Being a non-Tolkien fan, I personally didn’t care whether Rings of Power was accurate to the lore or not (though I could appreciate, and even agreed with, many of the arguments leveled against the show’s alterations).

Despite that, I sat down without reservations or any extreme judgements. I don’t like Lord of the Rings (there, I said it), so I was actually hoping for just a decent fantasy show.

Sadly, much of Rings of Power was plagued by an abundance of plot problems and inexplicable scripting, not to mention some truly awful casting / acting.

But, despite it’s flaws, there were parts of Rings of Power I genuinely adored. And the parts that I loved I loved infinitely more than anything in the original Lord of the Rings.

And at the top of this list of new loves was, undoubtedly, the Harfoots.

I’ve had this blog post in my head for a long time (since last year), so buckle up for a very long (and possibly offensive, if you’re an extreme Lord of the Rings fan) ramble.

I’m part of a new multi-author series!

I have been sitting on this announcement for nearly two years.

At the beginning of 2020, I was invited to my very first multi-author series, A Villains Ever After. It was one of the most fulfilling and fun things I have ever done as a writer. At the end of 2021, the collaboration was wrapping but, I knew I wasn’t done.

I had SO MUCH FUN doing a multi-author series that I made a very typical decision . . . I decided to throw my own party and organize my own collaboration!

I had barely finished publishing The Goblin and the Dancer before I was reaching out to other indie authors to make my budding idea come true.

And now, at last, I get to announce that the dream has become a reality.

Beowulf: A Tale Of Courage And Purpose

For various reasons, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about death and the purpose of life. (Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be depressing, just bear with me)

In the past few years, our nation has become obsessed with death. Doom is always a scroll away, reminding us how we walk on the knife edge of life.

And so we look away from the fire and into the shadows, fixated by death. When will it get us? How can we keep it from claiming others? And when life is so sad and ends so horribly, how is anything we do while we live significant?

I look around at the world and then down at my “silly, little fairy tales” and think, what’s the point? An inspiring Instagram caption, a funny story, a book club, they can all feel horrendously insignificant, even irreverent. The feeling that we are laughing at a funeral comes over us, and we shrink into grim silence as we remember that death is coming for all of us someday.

Then I read Beowulf.

Reading this classic piece stirred my faith up; turning ashes into sparks.

Sometimes, stories can reach us when our spirits have become cold to Scripture, and the story of Beowulf answered my twofold question: how do we deal with death, and how do we make our lives significant while we live?

The Give Thanks for Books Tag

In the spirit of blogging more on my author site and keeping things a little lighter (i.e. more like me), I’ve been looking around for some appropriately bookish tags for this space. And, when you’re looking for blogging inspiration, look no further than my friend Rachel Kovaciny at The Edge Of The Precipice, who comes up with the best blog tags!

In honor of Thanksgiving, Rachel came up with a tag that is all about our gratitude for BOOKS. As you can see below, all the prompts spell out the words GIVE THANKS. Isn’t that darling? It looked like so much fun that I just had to play along. So are you ready? Let’s talk about the books we’re grateful for!

Goodbye To Villains

A Villain’s Ever After is officially over. It was a project that I was enmeshed in for nearly a year and a half. Eighteen months of work, collaboration, and discovery. As an extroverted writer (yes, we do exist!) I cannot even begin to say how this project blessed me. It was truly one of the best experiences of my author life and I am sad that this project has reached its completion.
